Background
The '80s: Families on the Radar: The United Nations started paying closer attention to what families were dealing with. They realised families weren't just living happily ever after; they had real problems and needs.
The UN suggested getting the word out, making sure leaders and everyone else understood the challenges families faced and how to help.
The UN asked countries around the globe for their thoughts on maybe having a special year just for families. They wanted to hear ideas and suggestions.
What do the reports say? The UN also asked for a detailed report, gathering all those ideas on how to support families better and work together internationally to make things happen.
The International Year of the Family!: In 1989, the UN officially declared an International Year of the Family. It was a moment to really put families in the spotlight.
A Day to Remember Families: A few years later, in 1993, they decided that one day every year, May 15th, would be the International Day of Families. It's a yearly reminder to think about the issues that affect families and how society, the economy, and population changes play a role.
Families and a Better World: Fast forward to 2015, and the UN set some big goals for the planet – things like ending poverty and inequality. They realised that strong, supported families are super important for actually reaching those goals.
