The main impact that rural women and girls have on building resilience is undeniable as they can recover quickly from the difficulties, toughness, etc.

International Day of Rural Women 2019: Theme

The theme of the International Day of Rural Women 2019 is “Rural women and girls building resilience”. It focuses on the role of rural women in enhancing agriculture and rural development worldwide.

Do you know that one in three employed women works in agriculture? When natural resources and agriculture are threatened they are on the frontline. They not only take care of children and family but also collect biomass fuels, manually collect food materials and pump water. It is believed that more than 70% of households are dependent on women and girls for collecting water in the places where still water scarcity is there.

International Day of the Girl Child 2019: Current Theme, History and Significance

It has been seen that from 2006 to 2016 loss and damage resulting from climate-related disasters was suffered by the agriculture sector in the developing countries and the significant impact is seen on the rural women and the girls regarding food security and in their productive potential. More likely, women die during climate-related disasters and face greater constraints in accessing natural resources like land and water. No doubt, climate change aggravated the existing inequalities, leaving behind rural women and girls.

International Day of Rural Women: History

On 15 October 2008, the first International Day of Rural Women is observed and recognises the role of rural women and girls in enhancing rural development, improving the quality of food and eliminating rural poverty.

In 1995, the idea of honouring rural women as a special was put forward at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. 15 October date was suggested to celebrate the day as the International Day of Rural Women which is observed a day before World Food Day.

In several worlds poorer countries women play an important role in the rural economy. As they are not only involved in household activities but also carrying out several other activities to support their families’ livelihood.

One more thing that is important to focus on is poverty which also affects rural women. You will be amazed to know that world's 1 billion people are living in unacceptable conditions of poverty and are heavily concentrated in rural areas. Poverty rates in rural areas are higher than in urban areas. Nearly 80% of food is produced by the smallholder section of agriculture in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa and supports about 2.5 billion people in their livelihoods. Women farmers maybe are as productive as their male counterparts but are still less accessible to land, credit, agricultural inputs, markets and high-value agrifood chains and obtain lower prices for their crops.

International Day of Rural Women: Celebrations

Various government agencies, community groups and non-government associations celebrate this day on 15 October annually. It is also promoted on the television, radio, online and print media. To analyse the situation and problems faced by rural women, seminars, conferences, research papers, discussions are held and also focus on areas like economic improvement and agriculture development.

Therefore, on 15 October every year, the International Day of Rural Women is observed. It is important to understand the role that they play in the field of agriculture, food security and nutrition, land and resource management and domestic care work, etc.
