It was on May 22 that three countries, Spain, Norway, and Ireland expressed their decision to recognize a state of Palestine on the 28th of May. This comes as an important event, as it is for the very first time that a Western European country has chose to commit to a recognition like this.
How does it matter? Well, getting the recognition of a state by other nations can actually encourage the aspirations of a region. It boosts the desire to be considered a legitimate political entity even more.
Recognition as a state
What exactly is it meant to recognize a region as a state? Well, for this, one needs to turn the pages of the Montevideo Convention.
There are four conditions of a state that have been mentioned in the Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States. The four conditions are a defined territory, a permanent population, the capacity to enter into relations with other states and a government.
Many regions have tried to declare themselves as distinct independent states, the way the complete world views them also decides their formal recognition.
The importance of the recognition by Spain, Ireland, and Norway
In situations when a state chooses to recognize another, it generally involves the establishment of an embassy in that country. It also involves posting of diplomatic officials as well in that country. The Foreign Minister of Norway has stated that Norway's representative office to the Palestinian Authority would now become an embassy. The office was opened in the year 1999 in West Bank.
The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez has expressed that the country has chosen to recognize Palestine out of moral conviction. The Prime Minister said that the decision had been taken for a just cause. The PM further suggested that this is the only way through which Israel and Palestine can actually live together in peace.
The decision thus taken by the three countries can actually inspire other countries to follow.
