What are the Recent Developments in Bihar?

  • According to the Indian Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), “In 2023-24, Bihar’s GSDP at current prices is projected to be Rs. 8.59 trillion (US$ 104.62 billion). The state’s GSDP expanded at a CAGR (in Rs.) of 11.03% between 2015-16 and 2023-24.”
  • The 2023 budget prioritised education and rural development, with initiatives like weekly game periods and lighter school bags for children.
  • According to IBEF, In September of 2022, the Bihar Cabinet endorsed a proposal aimed at bolstering the medical infrastructure within the state by incorporating approximately 8,000 positions across government medical colleges and hospitals.
  • In February 2022, Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal, the Minister of Port, Shipping, and Waterways, inaugurated the commencement of construction for Bihar's inaugural intermodal inland waterways cargo terminal at Kalughat, located near Sonepur in the Saran district.
  • In August 2021, the Indian Railways revealed intentions to operate 28 pairs of special train services linking key cities within the state to other parts of the nation, following the Bihar government's relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions.
  • Bihar cultivates sugarcane on a relatively small portion of its land, around 6% of the total farmland. Despite this, the state produced an impressive 182.85 lakh metric tonnes of sugarcane in 2018-19. Bihar's sugar production capacity is also growing, with an estimated 220.50 lakh metric tonnes of sugar produced during the 2019-20 sugar season.
  • In September 2023, Bihar's power plants could generate a total of 7,927 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The majority of this capacity, exceeding 6,800 MW, came from central utilities. State utilities contributed just over 70 MW, while private utilities provided around 1,050 MW.
  • Between October 2019 and June 2023, Bihar received a total of US$ 214.50 million in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) according to a government report.
  • The net amount of goods and services produced in Bihar per person (Net State Domestic Product or NSDP) has been on a steady rise in recent years. On average, between 2015 and 2022, it's been growing by 8.45% each year.
  • The IBEF mentions: “Bihar is one of the strongest agricultural states in the country. The percentage of the population employed in agricultural production in Bihar is around 80%, which is much higher than the national average. It is the fourth-largest producer of vegetables and the eighth-largest producer of fruits in India.”
