Yash Dhull, the former captain of India's U-19 cricket team that won the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2022, recently underwent heart surgery after a congenital defect—a small hole in his heart—was discovered during a routine check-up at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The anomaly was identified while he was attending a high-performance camp in Bengaluru, prompting immediate medical advice for surgery, which he successfully completed in early July.

Yash Vijay Dhull is a 22-year-old Indian cricketer who has been in the spotlight due to his heart surgery. This right-hand batter, who led India to victory in the 2022 U-19 World Cup, has recently undergone heart surgery, which has raised concerns and curiosity among fans.

Rajesh Nagar, Dhull's coach for over ten years, informed PTI that the top-order batter underwent heart surgery in early July. This issue was discovered during routine scans at the U-23 high-performance camp at the NCA, where a small hole in Dhull's heart was detected.

Nagar stated, "The surgery was not major, and he took about 10 to 15 days to recover. He is currently at about 80 percent in terms of his game and fitness, which is sufficient for now."

In his recent X post, he said, "Kuch cheeze hui hai past mai… mai recover karke aaya hu. Thoda time lag raha hai but mai positive hu aur apne game ke liye 100% duga (certain things have happened in the past, and I have returned after a recovery. It’s taking time but I am positive and will give 100% for my game)," Dhull stated this following his dismissal for 8 runs off 11 balls against the East Delhi Riders in the afternoon.

What is a hole in the heart?

A "hole in the heart" refers to a congenital heart defect characterised by an abnormal opening in the walls (septum) separating the heart's chambers.

This condition is usually present at birth and can manifest in various forms, such as Atrial Septal Defects (ASDs) and Ventricular Septal Defects (VSDs). While most holes are congenital, they can also develop postnatally due to factors like heart attacks or medical procedures.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a hole in the heart can vary based on the defect's size and location. Many infants with small ASDs or VSDs may show no symptoms, while larger defects can lead to complications. Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath during physical activities
  • Swelling in the legs, feet, or abdomen
  • Heart palpitations
  • In severe cases, a stroke or heart murmur.

Causes

The exact causes of holes in the heart are often unclear, but genetics can play a significant role. Factors such as maternal smoking during pregnancy, certain hereditary disorders, and environmental influences may also contribute to the development of these defects. In some cases, congenital heart defects arise from developmental errors during foetal growth.

Cure

Treatment for a hole in the heart depends on the defect's size and associated symptoms. Many small defects may close on their own, while larger ones often require surgical intervention to prevent complications like heart failure or pulmonary hypertension.
