The Assam State Government has announced a range of infrastructure development projects in the state worth Rs. 12,000 Crore. The project includes setting up four new medical colleges in the state.
Construction from December 2020
While speaking to the media in Guwahati, the Assam Finance and Health Minister Biswa Sarma stated that the project will be the highest ever capital investment in the state. He further added that the work on the projects will begin from December for establishing the four medical colleges at Biawanath Chariali, Charaideo, Goalpara, and Guwahati.
Medical College in Guwahati
A second medical college in Guwahati will be constructed in collaboration with Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) and Kalapahar TB Hospital.the medical college will make it the best and largest one in the entire Eastern Indaregionwith respect to size, services, and treatment facilities.
Other projects lined up
Along with the four new medical colleges, nine women colleges, six-degree colleges, ten law colleges, two flavors, and statewide road corridors will also be included as a part of the Rs. 12,000 Crore project. The minister also stated that the state government plans to construct another 12 roads and for the external funding of these projects, the government is negotiating with the Asian Development Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
Increase spending capacity
In reference to the recent meeting conducted by the minister with the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman, Sarma stated that the new compensation formula for GST and continued release of revenue deficit grant will enhance the state governments' capacity of spending tremendously.
Assam has put in place several austerity measures following the COVID-19 pandemic and except for some austerity measures, many of the measures have been waived.
