Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ while speaking at the launch of the five ‘Quality Mandates’ has asked UGC to monitor research at the universities. The Minister said that the University Grants Commission should come up with a mechanism to monitor the research activities as a huge amount of money is being invested on research. The Minister said that there should be no repetition of the same research work which has been done earlier in such a scenario.
The Minister said that UGC should ask the Universities and check the kind of research the scholars are doing, who is taking lead of the research completed as yet and not do repetitive work. The five ‘Quality Mandates’ launched by the UGC include five documents covering five verticals. The five documents cover evaluation reforms, eco-friendly and sustainable university campuses, human values and professional ethics, faculty induction and academic research integrity.
Pokhriyal also discussed about the low ranks of Indian Universities in the various world rankings. He said in the various international rakings Indian universities lag behind in areas of innovation and research. He said that the Universities should work towards improving it. He also mentioned there are two challenges presently – improving the GER as well as ranking of Indian institutions. Nishank said that he is confident that the universities will be able to achieve it soon.
