Union Minister of State for Education - Sanjay Dhotre has launched a rapid antigen and accurate diagnostic kit for COVID-19 which has been developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The kit will be available at Rs. 50. The Director of IIT at the launch of the kit also added that the institute is indeed excited about the development and Professor Harpal Singh and his team from the Centre for Biomedical Engineering at IIT Delhi developed the Kit. and has been patented by IIT Delhi.
The Minister while launching the kit congratulated the institution for coming up with such a low-cost kit that can reach the villages and remote areas in the state. He further added that all the IITs have worked hard to address the needs of the people during the pandemic.
He also thanked IIT Delhi for making PPE kits that were never made in the country before which were also exported.
IIT Director V Ramgopal Rao stated that the Kit has got clearance from ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research and DGCI (Drug Controller General of India) and has also licensed the technology to two companies. In July 2020 IIT Delhi had developed the most affordable RT-PCR-based COVID-19 diagnostic kit for Rs. 399. IIT Delhi has also developed high-quality PPE kits and is now disrupting the rapid diagnostic market for COVID.
The director further conveyed his excitement for the technology which will reach rural areas for testing and by rapid testing prevention of further cases will be possible and the country can also benefit from it.
