Tamil Nadu School Holiday - A local holiday has been declared for March 12, 2025, by the Collector of Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu because of the Masi Magam festival. Tamil Hindus celebrate the Masi Magam festival, also called Maasi Makam, for ten days in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district.
The date of Masi Magam in 2025 is Wednesday, March 12. The festival, which draws thousands of devotees, features processions of temple deities to bodies of water for ceremonial baths.
During the Masi Magam festival, which is held on the 12th day of Masi (Tamil month), the esteemed temple images, called Utsava Murthis, are ceremoniously transported to neighboring rivers, ponds, or the sea for a ritual purification. The sacred bathing is witnessed and participated in by large crowds of devotees, drawn by this respected custom. It is thought that soaking in the water during this period cleanses sins and confers spiritual merit.
Twelve Shaiva temples and five Vaishnava temples host the celebration. As a result, on March 12, 2025, government buildings and educational institutions in the district will remain closed, according to Thanjavur District Collector B Priyanka Pankajam.
Saturday, March 29, 2025, will be a working day in order to make up for this holiday.
