The Supreme Court on Friday extended the last date for the admissions in the technical institutions providing relief to the students of Jammu and Kashmir who have not been able to come out of their homes due to the lockdown. As per the order released, the last date to submit the application to the technical institutions for the Jammu and Kashmir students is September 15, 2019, under the Prime Ministers Special Scholarship Scheme.
Under the scholarship scheme, 5869 scholarships will be offered to the deserving students from Jammu and Kashmir for the admissions in the academic year 2019-20 for the different undergraduate programmes offered in the different colleges. However, only 3672 students have joined the colleges allotted to them so far while 2401 students who were selected in the final round of counselling could join the allotted colleges before the last date which was August 15, 2019, due to the ongoing situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The standing counsel advocate for Jammu and Kashmir M Shoeb Alam had asked for an extension time for these students to report to the colleges.
Appearing before the court Advocate M Shoeb Alam argued that the students who are stuck in Jammu and Kashmir because of the ongoing condition could not report to the allotted colleges for the admissions before the given deadline which was August 15, 2019, asked the court to extend the reporting time up to a month for the students in Jammu and Kashmir.
The petition filed in the court stated that due to the state of Jammu and Kashmir being recognized into a Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Laddakh various restrictions have been imposed which include the prohibitions under the Section 144 CrPC and movement of people, suspension of phone lines, mobile and internet services and other forms of communications in the different parts of the regions from August 5, 2019.
After the hearing, the bench allowed the plea and extended the time for up to a month for admissions in colleges under the scheme.
