The Tamil Nadu government issued an order on March 22, 2021, to shift to online teaching. The state government came to this decision after a review meeting chaired by the State Chief Secretary and Health and Education department. The reason being is the rise in the cases of COVID-19 in the past few days. The colleges and universities in the state have been given the order to shift to online classes until further information. The online classes in Tamil Nadu colleges and universities will be held six days a week.
What happened at the meeting?
The chief Secretary Rajeev Ranjan had discussions with Vice Chancellors, they all "opined that the classes can be conducted online." After the discussion, the State Chief Secretary issued the order. Also, the semester examination will be conducted online, keeping in view the safety of the students.
The heads of the educational institute's have stated that 70 to 80 percent of the syllabus has been covered. Even practical classes and examination of engineering and polytechnic students are going on. Therefore, the government has given an exception to the students of these streams to complete their courses and finish the examination by 31st March 2021.
Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government in December 2020 allowed the functioning of final year classes whereas for the first, second and third-year students, classes started in February 2021. With Tamil Nadu witnessing a sudden rise in COVID-19 cases over the last few days, the government on Saturday ordered to shut down the schools of classes 9th, 10th and 11th from Monday until any further notice.
