The University Grants Commission (UGC) has spotted a good number of fake universities in India. The commission has posted on its official website a list of 21 unrecognized institutions located in nine states of India. These fake educational premises are functioning against the provisions of the UGC Act, 1956.
These unrecognized institutions have been declared fake by the UGC, and hence, they don’t have any right to offer academic degrees.
Only universities that are established by an Act of Parliament or the State Legislature or an institution deemed to be a university or an institution especially empowered by an Act of the Parliament can award degrees, asserts the Section 22(1) of the UGC Act. Further, according to the existing UGC law, no institutions other than a university established by or under a Central or a State Act or a Provincial Act can use the word "University" in its nomenclature.
The following 21 universities have been found to defy the UGC Act, 1956 and have been declared as fake universities:

Another University -- Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad, Lucknow, UP – is currently a sub judice matter before the District Judge, Lucknow, and is likely at the status of fake university.
The UGC has warned students against pursuing any higher education course at any of the aforementioned institutions.
