There is some good news for all the MBA aspirants vying for a seat in the best B-school of India i.e. IIM Ahmedabad. As per the latest update, lIM Ahmedabad is planning to increase the current 860 seats available 1200 seats for its flagship PGP programme for the 2017-19 batch. In addition, it also plans to add Another 400 seats to the post-graduate programme for executives (PGPEX). India’s undisputed number 1 B-school has submitted a detailed proposal for the increase in the seat for their post-graduate programme to MHRD. If approved. The total seats for IIM-A will go up from the current 440, which is including the PGP and PGP-FABM taken together.
How will the increased number of seats at IIMA impact you?
Put simply, the increased number of seats at IIM Ahmedabad means more number of seats available to domestic students for admission to India's top B-school. Although no official updates are available right now. But rumors suggest that we can look at around 10% increase in the overall student strength at IIMA. If proven right it could mean an increase of 44 seats to the current tally of 440 seats. However, it would be interesting to see the classification of the increased number of seats among different programmes like PGP, PGP-FABM and PGPx.

Supernumerary seats are the number of admission slots reserved for foreign candidates, which allowed the institute to look for quality students for their flagship programme. It also promoted IIMA as a global learning centre for management education. For foreign students, GMAT scores form the basis of selection to the final round of admission process through supernumerary seats. The introduction of supernumerary seats in 201 5-16 offered more space to domestic MBA aspirants to be selected PGP programme at IIM Ahmedabad. The increase in the total number of seats at IIMA is a step in right direction.
