Summary of A Question of Trust
Horace Danby was a fifty-year-old unmarried businessman who made locks and safes. He was an honest and respectable citizen who had kept a housekeeper who looked after his health and two helpers in his business. But, he had a long-kept secret. He had an obsession for rare and expensive books, which is obviously a good thing but he had the habit of stealing for buying the books he loved. Despite his old age, he was a healthy man except for his attack of hay fever in summer. Horace would plan a robbery and steal enough to last for the next twelve months.
Just like every Summer, this July, he was planning his robbery. He studied Shotover Grange for two weeks and finally decided to rob the house when all the family members were in London and the two housekeepers had gone to watch a movie. He climbed the garden wall with the bag of tools on his back and entered the house. He had seen the servants put the key on a hook in the kitchen. He put on his gloves and opened the door. As he entered the house, Sherry, the dog came running to him, waving his tail. Horace knew the trick to ensure that the dogs were quiet, all they need is to call them by the right name and love them.
He went to the hall where the Grange safe worth fifteen thousand pounds of Jewels was hidden behind a poor painting. Beside the painting was a table with flowers. Horace was preparing to open the safe and he cut the wire of the alarm. The flowers made him sneeze but he was focused enough to open the safe which was not a tough task for him as he had spent his entire life besides locks and safes.
He heard a firm voice behind him asking if he had got a cold or was it hay fever, to which he replied hay fever and turned back immediately. He saw a young and pretty woman in red and Sherry was rubbing against her. She said, “Down Sherry, anyone would think that I am in London” and smiled at Horace. He thought he could ensure that the situation was under his control and firmly talked to the woman. She opened a silver box at the table and picked up a cigarette. Horace quickly removed his gloves and took out his cigarette lighter to impress the lady.
After a short conversation, she said that she would let him go only if he helped her. Horace readily agreed to it. The lady says that his husband is not going to be there for the next month and she needs the jewels in the safe for a party that was going to take place the same night. But, she had forgotten the password so she needed him to break the safe and get her the jewels, post which she would get the safe mended before her husband came back.
Horace did as she said and went home happily. For the next two days, he was thinking about his promise to the lady of not stealing again but on the third day, he started thinking about the books he wanted. The same noon he was arrested by the police for stealing the Shotover Grange safe. The police told him that they got his fingerprints from the safe as he had not used the gloves to open it. A gray-haired old age woman, who was the owner of the jewels inside the safe had complained about it. Horace kept thinking about the woman who tricked him and stole the jewels.
