CCEA Nod to Add above 10, 000 MBBS Seats in Government Medical Colleges

The Central government on 9 January has sanctioned the proposal of adding 10,000 above MBBS seats across government medical colleges running all over the country in order to meet the scarcity of doctors in the nation.

For this proposal that demands a budget of Rs. 10,000 crore, the Centre will offer Rs. 7,500 crore whereas the state/Union Territory government will add Rs. 2,500 crore.

In the meeting held on 9 January, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave green signal to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s proposal of Rs. 10,000 crore that aimed at upgrading the existing state government/central government medical colleges by adding more than 10,000 seats for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.

The estimated cost for one MBBS seat will come out to be Rs. 1.20 crore.

The Central and State Governments will fund in a ratio of 90:10 respectively for the North Eastern region as well as states belonging to special category, whereas for other states the funding ratio would be 70:30 respectively.

The goal of this proposal is to help bring down the doctor-patient ratio to1:1000from the existing 1:2000.

To solve the current problem of scarcity of qualified doctors the government is striving to raise the seats from the present 50,000 MBBS seats across the country to 10,000 more.

This will help the government also to serve to the rural areas where the population is in much need for qualified doctors.
