The UPSC conducted the CDS (II) Exam on November 2017. The exam consisted of three papers – English, Elementary Mathematics and General Knowledge. For the benefit of aspirants, Jagran Josh is providing sectional wise distribution of questions asked in the exam. Besides, the answers along with detailed explanation is also given. They are as follows.

Observations -
• On an average 20 questions are asked from General Science that includes Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The questions were intended to test candidate’s conceptual clarity. These questions can be answered by reading basic books of NCERT.
• From Geography, around 15 questions are asked in every exam. The questions are spread over physical, economic and human geography. While physical geography covers topics like landforms, drainage, soils, etc, human geography covers topics like census, important tribal groups, etc. Questions from economic geography cover important industrial areas, mineral resources distribution, transport infrastructure, etc.
• Around 15 questions are asked from History and Culture. The Majority of the history questions are from the Modern India, especially from Indian Freedom Movement. Besides few questions are also from the Medieval India (Mughal Empire) and Indus Valley Civilization. Questions from Indian Culture are mostly from Ancient India. Besides, at least 2-3 questions are from World History covering areas like Industrial Revolution, American History, etc.
• The Majority of the questions of Indian Polity are based on the Indian Constitution covering areas like – Preamble, Fundamental Rights, DPSPs, Amendments to Constitutuion, Schedules, PRIs, Judiciary, etc. Besides, questions are also asked on statutory bodies. Hence candidates are advised to read material on important statutory bodies like National Commission for Women, National Human Rights Commission, etc.
• From Economy, around ten questions are asked in every exam. The topics covered are – planning, budgetary concepts, GDP growth rates, base years, industrial growth, finance commission, etc. The candidates should note that around 50% of the economy questions are current affairs related.
• Questions from Environment have increased in recent times. Though the majority of the concepts are covered under Geography and Biology, a special emphasis should be given while studying, especially on biomes, protected areas, pollution, multilateral agencies, important agreements, etc.
• Questons from ‘India Defence Management’ cover topics like missile technologies, naval commands, air force bases, regiments of Indian Army, vessels of Indian Navy, heads of tri-services, important days related to army, navy and air force, etc.
• Current Affairs has been playing a critical role in recent times. Questions from this section cover topics like – International Affairs, National and Sports. Special emphasis should be given to persons in news (persons appointed, elected, persons died), awards, important national and international days, etc.
• Apart from the above mentioned areas, questions can be asked from traditional GK like – inventors, famous scientists and their quotes, landmarks, currencies, capital cities of countries, etc.
