Energy engineering course has become very popular these days. Looking at the soaring energy demand and public and private efforts for energy production, the future of career in this field is very bright. Energy Engineers are in demand not only in India, but abroad also. According to an estimate of Electricity Ministry, power generation needs to double by the end of next decade. In such a scenario, demand for energy engineers is bound to increase. Moser and Baer is establishing a 500 million dollar PV fabrication plant in Chennai with installed annual capacity of 40 megawatts. The company will require nearly 4, 000 scientists and engineers in its initial phase. Solar Photovoltaic Technology has also recorded 62 percent growth in comparison to last year. It is evident that companies established in this area will need a lot of trained manpower.
Ability and Courses
For admission to BE or BTech courses in energy engineering, 12 pass is required with physics, chemistry and mathematics subjects. MTech can also be done after finishing BTech. Most institutions grant admission based on results in entrance tests. However, specialization in energy is more popular in MTech in comparison to under graduate level. In masters' courses, more emphasis is given to topics such as Renewable sources of energy and improvements in non-conventional sources of energy.
Individual Characteristics
A successful energy engineer must be logical and analytical. This field doesn't require direct contact with too many people. Hence, even an introverted person can become a successful energy engineer. An energy engineer may have to spend considerable amount of time away from home, so they should be mentally prepared for this. Further, they should have patience and always remain updated.
Scope
Increasing awareness about climate change and global warming has given a boost to the demand for energy engineers. Trained manpower is much in demand in various government institutions, especially in renewable energy development agencies in various states. Government has made it mandatory for industry to employ people with specialization in energy auditing, energy conservation and energy management.
