The new class of 2019 at IIM Sambhalpur welcomes 51% female candidates which is the highest even in the history of the institute and all other IIMs. With a batch size of 98 students, there are 50 female candidates making it to the PGPM 2019-21 batch. With the steep rise in the gender diversity ratio, the institute has left even the top IIMs such as IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta behind the league to chase this target. IIM Sambhalpur has shown drastic improvement in the sphere of the management education and aims to boost the diversity in other aspects as well like academic background diversity to name a few.
Considering that the actual size of IIM Sambalpur PGP 2019-21 batch is much less than any of the top IIMs, the relative proportion of women students in the institute is undoubtedly the highest till date among all other IIMs. In previous batches, IIM Sambalpur has shown a very low record of gender diversity. On this achievement, IIM Sambalpur's Director Dr. Mahadeo Jaiswal commented that "The number of the girls, taking admission in IIM Sambalpur is the highest among the IIMs in the country. Proper communication about the institution and the growth of the institution besides good placement record are the reasons, which attracted more number of girl students to this institution".

Gender diversity fact file: Other IIMs
Taking a dig at the status of other IIMs, IIM Calcutta's current batch comprise of 31% women (152 of 480), IIM Bangalore (165 of 441), Lucknow (148 of 405) and IIM Ahmedabad (93 of 388) have also shown a drastic improvement embracing the diversity ratio in the class of 2019-21. Apart from these institutes, IIM Kozhikode has enrolled 30% women (148 of 497), marking considerable improvement from the previous year.

Why gender diversity matters in MBA Placements?
As far as the MBA placements at the top-tier MBA Institutes is concerned, even recruiters have shown keen interest in hiring the female candidates at the deserving profiles. Anu Madgavkar, partner, McKinsey Global Institute commented that the inclusion of more female at the grassroot level i.e. from the early stages of management education can solve the issue of breaking 'glass ceiling' when it comes to fulfilling career aspirations. Even the board members look forward to the participation of females on the board.
Alongside, top recruiting firms such as Deloitte says that the workforce diversity is the collective responsibility of all stakeholders. It is imperative to have a gender-balanced workforce to ensure that the growth and development of the market is also balanced.
