Established in the year 1981, K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai is also popularly known as SIMSR. The institute has been granted the autonomous status by the University Grants Commission, India and notified by the University of Mumbai. The admission process at the institute is now open for 2019-21 PGDM batch. The last date to apply at SIMSR is January 10, 2019.

Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai offers various two-years full-time PGDM programs namely PGDM-Financial Services; PGDM-International Business; PGDM Communication, PGDM-Retail Management, PGDM-Health Care Management, Master in Management Services. Candidates know more about the courses below:

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) at SIMSR is a two year full time AICTE approved management program. The PGDM program is equivalent to an MBA degree as per the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The course allows students to specialize in a field of their preference in the second year. The specializations options offered in the course are Marketing, Finance, HR and Operations.

Post Graduate Diploma in Management - International Business (PGDM-IB)

This is a two-year full-time postgraduate level management program. The program is focused on helping students become competent and versatile in specialized areas related to International Business such as International Business Strategies, International Trade Finance, Business in Emerging Markets, Country Analysis, Sectoral Strategies, International Marketing and MNC Management               


This is a two-year full-time postgraduate level management program in the field of retail. The course is aimed at helping students build a career in the field of retail management. It prepares them to face the challenges in the retail industry by judicious mix of theory and practical applications. Retail is one the fast growing industry in the country and pursuing this course can help students to take advantage of the growing opportunities in the field.


PGDM in Financial Services is two-year full-time postgraduate level management program. The course aims to provide a comprehensive coverage of the various aspects of the Indian Financial system comprising of markets, institutions, products and services. The course also provides insights into niche areas such as financial modelling, commodity markets, fixed income securities etc. The course provides career opportunities in the field of Banking, Insurance, Rating Agencies, Regulators, Capital Marketsand Financial Institutions.


PGDM in Communications is two-year full-time post graduate level management program. The course aims at familiarizing students with the importance of integrated Marketing Communications in building strong brands.The programmeendeavours to enable the participants to design, develop, execute and assess the impact of 360 degrees Integrated Marketing Communications programs and campaigns to launch, build, maintain and rejuvenate brands.


Post Graduate Diploma in Management in Health Care Management (PGDM-HCM) is a two year AICTE approved Postgraduate Program in Healthcare. The course has been launched in academic partnership with Imperial College UK and Somaiya Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai.The program intends to build managerial competencies along with imparting comprehensive knowledge in Healthcare sector growing at an unprecedented rate. The program aims to integrate healthcare delivery and operations along with finance, innovation and entrepreneurship.

SIMSR Eligibility Criteria

Candidates aspiring to secure admission at the different management programs offered at K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai need to first ensure that the meet the prescribed eligibility criteria. Only candidates who meet the criterion mentioned below will be eligible for participation in the 2019-21 admissions at the institute.

  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree of a minimum 3 years duration with atleast 50% marks or an equivalent CGPA.
  • Candidates must register and appear for CAT 2018/XAT 2019/CMAT 2019/GMAT (Taken before February 10, 2019). They are also obtain the minimum required score to be eligible to participate in the admission process.
  • Candidates appearing in the final year of their bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification exam are also eligible to apply. If shortlisted such as candidate will be considered provisionally eligible for admission and would be required to submit his/her marksheet and degree certificate of the final year bachelor’s degree examination by July 31, 2019.
  • Work Experience is not a mandatory requirement for admission to the management programs offered at K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai. 

SIMSR 2019-21 Admission Process

Candidates can follow the below mentioned steps to secure admission in the various PGDM Programs offered at K J Somaiya Institute of Management, Mumbai:

Step 1: Candidates need to first register and appear for CAT 2018/XAT 2019/CMAT 2019/GMAT (Taken before February 10, 2019).

Step 2: Aspirants need to fill and submit the common application for all the management programs being offered at KJ Somaiya Mumbai. The application forms are available in the online mode on the official website of the institute.

Step 3: Candidates who applied for admission at KJ Somiya will be shortlisted based on their entrance exam scores. Eligible candidates will have to appear for the next phase i.e. Group Discussions and Personal Interviews. Candidates will be shortlisted for the GD-PI rounds post the announcement of the entrance exam results.

Step 4: After successful completion of the GD-PI rounds institute will prepare a merit list on the basis of the selection process. The shortlisted candidates will be asked to fill in the program details of the course of their choice in the online mode.

Step 5: The institute will make admission offers based on the program of their preference and availability of seats.

SIMSR2019-21 Admission Cut Offs

The cut-off at K J Somaiya is not pre-defined. It depends upon the quality & number of applications received and varies from year to year for different courses. K J Somaiya will decide the Cutoff 2019 on the basis of aggregate percentile score in the entrance exam although candidates should also score well across the sections of the entrance exam.  The expected cut offs may remain as under:

SIMSR Admission Shortlisting Criteria

SIMSR Admission Shortlisting Criteria for the 2019-21 batch will constitute a two-step process, the first phase being shortlisting candidates based on entrance exam score and secondly shortlisting candidates based on their performance in the Final admission selection Criteria with only 35% weightage to entrance exam score. Candidates can refer below for further details regarding the shortlisting process of the first phase:

  • SIMSR will shortlist candidates based on their performance in the acceptable entrance exams. Aspirants will need to apply and appear for either CAT 2018, XAT 2019, CMAT 2019 or GMAT (taken before February 10, 2019). Candidates will also be required to obtain the minimum required cut-offs marks to eligible for participation in the final admission shortlisting process.
  • SIMSR will consider the candidate’s total overall scores in acceptable entrance exams and not the sectional scores for the shortlisting process.
  • Applicants can submit more than one entrance test score. However, SIMSR will only consider the best test score for the shortlisting process.
  • All the shortlisted candidates need to fill Profile form and SOP before appearing in the GD-PI round,

SIMSR Final Admission Selection Criteria

The final admission selection criteria at SIMSR is as given below:

  • The Final Admission Selection Round at SIMSR consists of case based GD and an in-depth Personal Interview Round.
  • The institute awards 35% weightage to the candidate’s entrance exam score, 20% weightage to academics, 5% weightage to work experience, 25% weightage to personal interview, 17% weightage to Case based GD and 8% weightage to extracurricular activities/achievements. 
  • The highest score with 10% weight to academics will be given to candidates who have scored more than 80% marks in Class 10, 12, graduation and also holds PG or above degree.
  • Weightage for work experience would ideally be given to a candidate only if he/she has worked in executive or supervisory role for a minimum period of one year. The highest weight of 5% is awarded to the candidates with a work experience between 2 and 3 years.
  • The highest weightage of 8% for achievements will be awarded to the candidates who have participated in international level sports, extracurricular activities, additional qualification acquired from certified bodies, achievements in areas other than work place. 
  • The final merit list with position of the candidates will be declared based on the above parameters. Selected Candidate need to fill program preference details online. Candidates will be offered choice of the program based on their preference, merit position and availability of seats
