The Education Minister of Maharashtra, Vinod Tawde made it clear that there was no plan on part of the government to teach Bhagwad Gita to municipal school students in Mumbai or any Maharashtra schools as pointed out by some sources and were reported all over in the media.

Education Minister Tawde said that, “There is absolutely no such proposal” when he got questioned about the media reports that quoted a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officer saying that all municipal schools in the city and suburbs would teach it’s students Bhagwad Gita, so that they could become more focused in their life and it could boost their morale and impart knowledge about spirituality.

Tawde, addressing the reporters in Vidhan Bhawan said that besides teaching Bhagwad Gita, Quran and Bible, there are other ways to inculcate value education among students. They are exploring the other ways. Conforming what the education minister told to the reporters, the BMC education committee chairman Vinod Shelar followed suit and said, “There is no such plan by the BMC.” According to Shelar, the official from the BMC who got quoted in the media reports must have been a victim of mis-representation and he might have got misquoted.

Under BMC there are presently 1153 schools that are running with a total strength of 4, 78,000 students. Every year the corporation needs to spend over Rs. 3,500 crore to impart free education to the children in nine regional languages in the state.
