In quite shocking news, around 62% of the schools in Tamil Nadu are found to have no science laboratories at all. The students seeking education from these schools are severely lacking the proper practical training in their science lessons. The markings on practical subjects for class 10 and 12 board examinations are done separately taking into account the practical skills of the students. Without any labs in these schools the students are bound to face enormous problems in their practical exams. In almost all the schools the science subjects consists of practical classes, without which the students are left helpless in most of the schools. The marks of the students in such schools are also getting affected due to improper lab facilities.
The figures have come forward through a survey of the 11,091 secondary and higher secondary schools in the state , conducted by Unified District Information System on Education(UDISE) and Delhi-based National University for Educational Administration and Planning(NUEAP) during 2013-14. In the report most of the private schools seem to have a minimum lab for their students. It is with the schools in the rural areas and the government schools where the facility of labs are majorly absent.
In place of the experiments that should get conducted in the labs the teachers need to teach the students by drawing or through some other methods, without a proper lab in place. Though there are experiments mentioned in the syllabus these schools can’t offer the same to the students. At least one session in laboratory each week is necessary for the students to perform experiments in their syllabus and score well in the exams.
