Eligibility criteria
Flying Branch
- Age: 19 to 23 years as on 1 July 2012
- Educational qualification: Graduate (3 year degree course) in any discipline from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate and have passed Maths and Physics at 10+2 level or BE/ B Tech Degree (4 years couse) from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate.
- Physical Standards
a) Height and Weight: Minimum Height- 162.5 cms with correlated weight as per age.
b) Eye Sight: Distant Vision 6/6, 6/9 correctable to 6/6 only for hypermetropia.
Technical Branch
- Age: 18 to 28 years as on 1 July 2012
- Educational qualification: 4 year degree course in Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) and Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical).
- Physical Standards
i) Height and Weight: Minimum Height- 157.5 cms with correlated weight as per age.
Ground Duty Branch
- Age (as on 1 July 2012)
a) 20 to 23 years (graduates)
b) 20 to 25 years (post-graduates)
c) 20 to 26 years (LLB, 3 year after graduation)

- Physical Standards

Type of Commission
a) Permanent Commission: Candidates will serve till the age of superannuation.
b) Short Service Commission: 14 years from the date of commissioning for SSC Flying Branch (not extendable) and 10 years for technical and ground duty branches with an extension of 4 years subject to availability of vacancies.

Selection procedure
Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) will be conducted for candidates at the designated examination centres. The test will be of 2 hours duration and will contain multiple choice questions on verbal ability, numerical ability, reasoning, general awareness and aptitude. Candidates who clear the AFCAT will be called for further testing at the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs) at Dehradun, Mysore, or Varanasi. The second round of test will consist of the following examination.
- Stage I- Intelligence Test
- Stage II- Psychological test, group test and interview
Candidates selected after stage II will undergo branch specific test based on their eligibility/ choice of branches
i) Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT) for flying branch
ii) Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT) for technical branch
c) Medical Test
