The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a vocational course in sports on fitness and gym operation to be commenced from the academic session 2012-13.

There are several sports academies in India but not all varsities have Physical Education as a discipline on offer, except for the central Delhi University. The Delhi University is the among the rare universities in India that offers courses in physical education and sports sciences at undergraduate, postgraduate as well as PhD levels under its department of Physical Education, named as - The Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Sciences (IGIPESS).
IGIPESS has BSc programme in physical education, health education and sports sciences (PEHES). Its PG level programme offers a Bachelor of physical education (BPED) programme. Furthermore, the BA (disciplinary ) and BA (application course) is also conducted by the institute along with many other DU colleges.

Since the sports field is yet under-developed in India which makes Sports opportunities scarce , many aspirants decides on pursuing the same from overseas universities where degree in sports can be offered under better amenities as well as more study options and job opportunities are available.
India has Cricket has most appreciated sport and it dominates as well but the other sports do call-for attention as well, for which a step to take a multi-disciplinary approach towards sports, Chennai-based Ramachandra University has introduced a B.Sc degree in sports and exercise sciences.
Though with the globalization of sport and the launch of several league-based tournaments such as IPL, most teams take help form coaches and sports medicine practitioners, however our nation lacks an planned and scientific approach to performance assessment.
