In the 19th century hunger strikes, anshans and dharnas had a powerful motive or purpose behind them and the demands were quite reasonable but in today's world they have lost their significance and it has been noticed in some instances that demands are unreasonable too.
With Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement and Arvind Kejriwal's emergence in the Indian political scene, we have seen a revival of bandhs or strikes majorly in the last three years. While the impact of strikes has been tremendous in some cases (eg. Lokpal movement), in other instances they have neither been justifiable nor appropriate.
Many bandhs are organized for certain genuine causes but the way they are carried out hampers people's daily schedule, especially commuting; someone might be dying waiting for their last hope, an ambulance, but it might be stuck somewhere because of people protesting in the middle of the road or maybe due to Bharat band.
Destroying public property is definitely not the solution to any problem, strikes and bandhs causes huge revenue losses as public transport and life comes to a stndstill, during strike productivity goes down as mostly strikes are by labours unions for income rise or better working environment and strike is done to prove their worth/importance to the employee, these strikes are a roadblock to the economic development of the nation.
Nowadays bandhs or dharnas have become a political tool which causes unnecessary violence and hindrance in people's day-to-day life as these strikes cause traffic jams and trouble daily schedule of people.
Bandh, which is a Hindi word, means 'closed'. It is a form of protest used by political activists. Supreme court legally banned the bandh in 1998 but political parties organise them. Bandh leads to economic losses generated from the within and it is termed as social costs! The perspective behind the bandh is totally lost, it has become an activity/tool to fulfill one's political agenda rather than really addressing the root cause of any issue .
Strike or bandhs are of various types
• Sick-Down: To make employee realize workers importance.
• Slow-Down: Cut down on work, reduce production.
• Sympathy-Strike: Unions of different organisations get-together and strike for common issue or sympathy factors.
Strike is a wastage of resources and man-power. Many times strikes and bandh create a different problem, instead of solving the problem it worsens the situation and affect normal life. Bandh has become a fear, a tool to protest. The aim and objective of a strike might have a good underlying reason but the way it is being performed makes all the difference. The aim and objective behind bandh and strike is for the benefit of the general public, but it affects their various civil rights which is diminishing the value and importance behind the entire protest.
