The equation of hyperbola whose coordinates of the foci are (±8, 0) and the length of latus rectum is 24 units, is

(A) 3x^{2} – y^{2} = 48

(B) 4x^{2} – y^{2} = 48

(C) x^{2} – 3y^{2} = 48

(D) x^{2} – 4y^{2} = 48

The coordinates of foci of hyperbola are (±ae, 0)

The length of latus rectum of hyperbola is 2b^{2}/a

So,

ae = 8 …(1)

Also,

2b^{2}/a = 24

So,

64 = a^{2} + 12a …(2)

From (1) and (2),

a = 48

e = 1/6

So, the equation of hyperbola is

x^{2}/16 – y^{2}/48 = 1

Or, 3x^{2} – y^{2} = 48

Hence, the correct option is (A).
