Attention Chrome users in India! The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) recently issued a security alert regarding vulnerabilities in older versions of Google Chrome. These vulnerabilities could potentially allow hackers to steal your data or compromise your device.

What's the Risk?

The vulnerabilities identified by CERT-IN can be exploited by attackers in a few ways:

Remote Code Execution: Malicious actors could potentially take control of your computer by tricking you into visiting a compromised website.

Denial-of-Service (DoS): Hackers could disrupt your computer's normal function, making it difficult or impossible to use.

Data Theft: Sensitive information like login credentials or financial details could be stolen if your browser is not secure.

The CERT-IN mentions: “These vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome for Desktop due to Use after free in Media Session, Dawn & Presentation API; Out of bounds memory access in Keyboard; Out of bounds write in Streams API and Heap buffer overflow in WebRTC. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a victim to visit a specially crafted Web page.Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system.”

How to Stay Safe?

The good news is that Google has already released patches to address these vulnerabilities. Here's how to ensure you're protected:

  • Update Chrome Immediately: This is the most crucial step. Open Chrome, click the three vertical dots in the top right corner, go to "Settings," then "About Chrome."  If an update is available, it will download and install automatically. Restart Chrome after the update is complete.
  • Enable Automatic Updates: To avoid future security risks,  turn on automatic updates in Chrome settings. This way, your browser will always be protected with the latest security patches.
  • Be Cautious Online: Even with an updated browser, it's important to practice safe browsing habits.  Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading files from untrusted sources.
  • Consider a Security Suite: An additional layer of protection can come from a reputable antivirus or internet security suite.

How to Stay Informed?

CERT-IN regularly issues advisories about security threats. You can visit their website (https://www.cert-in.org.in/) to stay informed about the latest risks and how to protect yourself.

By following these steps, you can keep your Google Chrome browser secure and minimize the risk of online threats. Remember, staying updated and practicing safe browsing habits are essential for a secure online experience.
