The ICC Champions Trophy is set to make a highly anticipated return in 2025, marking its first edition since 2017. This prestigious ODI tournament will bring together eight of the world’s top teams, all looking for glory and a huge prize pool. The tournament will be particularly special as it marks Pakistan’s first time hosting an ICC event since the 1996 Cricket World Cup.
The first match will begin on Wednesday, 19th February 2025 and conclude on March 9. Every game will hold immense importance, as teams battle to advance through a challenging format.
The ICC Champions Trophy will begin in Karachi, with the host country Pakistan facing off against New Zealand.
However, India’s matches will not take place in Pakistan due to travel restrictions. Instead, the Indian team will play all its group-stage fixtures in Dubai. Their campaign kicks off against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by a high-stakes clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23, and concluding with a match against New Zealand on March 2.
The tournament will follow a traditional structure, with the eight competing nations divided into two groups of four. The top two teams from each group will move on to the semi-finals, with the winners of those matches clashing in the grand finale.
ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Prize Money
The stakes are higher than ever, with the total prize money for the tournament soaring to $6.9 million—a remarkable 53% increase from the 2017 edition. The winning team will claim an impressive $2.24 million, cementing their place in cricket history. The runners-up won’t go home empty-handed, securing $1.12 million for their efforts.
The teams that reach the semi-finals but fall short of the final will still receive substantial rewards, with each semi-finalist earning $560,000. Even group stage victories carry financial significance, as every match win will bring in over $34,000.
Teams finishing in fifth and sixth place will each be awarded $350,000, while the seventh and eighth-placed sides will receive $140,000. Additionally, every participating team is guaranteed a base amount of $125,000 just for competing in this elite tournament.
The ICC has also confirmed that the Men’s Champions Trophy will now be a quadrennial event, taking place every four years, ensuring its long-term place in international cricket. Meanwhile, the first-ever Women’s Champions Trophy is set to debut in 2027, featuring a T20 format, marking another significant milestone in the evolution of women’s cricket.
The ICC Chair Jay Shah mentioned: "The ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 represents a pivotal moment for cricket, reviving a tournament that highlights the pinnacle of ODI talent, where every match is critical. The substantial prize pot underscores the ICC's ongoing commitment to investing in the sport and maintaining the global prestige of our events."
"Beyond the financial incentive, this tournament ignites fierce competition, captivates fans worldwide, and plays a vital role in fostering the growth and long-term sustainability of cricket for future generations," he adds.
