Indian army is an important institution in India. Most of the competitive exams test the knowledge of exam aspirants on the setup of Indian army which is responsible for securing the Indian territories.

Structure of the Indian army is as following:

Headed by: Chief of the Army Staff

Headquarters: New Delhi

Strength: 1200000 approximately

Number of commands: 7

The command structure is as following:

Command Headquarters
Northern Command Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir
Southern Command Pune, Maharashtra
Eastern Command Kolkata, West Bengal
Western Command Chandimandir, Chandigarh
Central Command Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh
South-Western Command Jaipur, Rajasthan
Training Command Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

Each command, directly affiliated to the Army Headquarters is under an officer who is of the rank of Lt. General.
