The 55-year-old music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan, left for his heavenly abode on Tuesday. He was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer at a hospital in Kolkata. His health took a major downturn after experiencing a cerebral attack last month, and he was on a ventilator, receiving oxygen support. Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee mourned over his death and said, "This is a great loss for the entire country and the entire music fraternity. I am in a lot of pain as I still can't believe that Rashid Khan is no more."

Rashid Khan gave his debut performance at the young age of eleven. The following year, in 1978, he took part in an ITC concert in Delhi. At the age of 14, Rashid Khan enrolled in the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA), Calcutta, in April 1980, after his uncle Nissar Hussain Khan joined the institute. It is this place, where he was officially recognised as a musician at the academy in 1994.

Rashid Khan passed away in a private hospital in Kolkata on January 9, 2024. He had fought cancer for a very long period. Khan sought treatment at the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital following his prostate cancer diagnosis. Later on, he decided to seek specialised care in Kolkata. Khan responded favourably to the treatment at first. However, on December 23, his condition worsened and he was admitted to the hospital. There, he was put on a ventilator to sustain his oxygen levels, but unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 55.
His musical journey is globally appreciated. He was honoured with numerous awards including, Padma Shri (2006), Banga Bhushan (2012), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2006), Global Indian Music Academy Awards (GIMA) (2010), Maha Sangeet Samman Award (2012), Mirchi Music Awards (2013), and the prestigious Padma Bhushan (2022).
