As per the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the B.Tech Degrees and Diplomas in Engineering and Technology offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University from the 2011-2012 academic session will be treated as valid.
Online Distance Courses
Indira Gandhi National Open University offered the two-year course via distance learning although the courses were discontinued after the University Grants Commission stated that they are in violation of the rules and technical courses cannot be offered via distance learning.
According to a statement, IGNOU was conducting the courses in the distance mode and litigations were ongoing in different courts regarding the validity of the courses.
Validity of degree offered
According to an order issued by the Policy and Academic planning Bureau of the Technical Education Regulator, the Supreme Court in 2018 recognized the validity of the Diploma and B.Tech programmes offered by IGNOU to the students who were enrolled from the academic year 2009-10.
According to the order the Supreme Court has now granted some relief to the petitioners from 2010-11 and 2011-1 academic year and are of the opinion that since there is no distance education course in IGNOU for the above-mentioned subjects after these many years, these are the las batches who will be granted the relief.
The AICTE has further pointed out that it has no objection for the B.Tech Degree and Diploma in Engineering awarded by IGNOU to the students who were enrolled until the 2011-12 academic year with IGNOU according to the supreme court judgment and so are treated as valid as a special case but cannot be taken as precedence and will not be considered post-2012.
