The Delhi State government has announced a few initiatives for education in Delhi as part of its 2020-21 budget. The provisions mentioned in the annual budget include setting up a separate education board for Delhi, Curriculum Revision, Beginning 5 new schools of Excellence, Teacher Training University, Spoken English programmes for the Alumni of Government schools and the participation in the PISA Test in 2024. 

The budget which was presented by the Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister, Manish Sisodia at the Delhi Assembly said that the Government has allocated Rs. 15,815 Crores towards the education sector. This amounts to 24 per cent of the total budget. 

While delivering the budget he said that Rs. 15,815 crores will be spent on education in the 2020-2 financial year. These spendings include Rs. 443 crores for the education-related schemes of the different departments. Out of the total amount Rs. 7031 crore has been allotted for implementing different programmes, schemes and projects which will be 24 per cent more apart from the Revised Estimate of 2019-20. The education minister also added that the government is also contemplating joining the PISA ( Programme for International Student Assessment) Test 2024. 

He said that the PISA also known as the Programme for International Student Assessment is the most important international educational assessment process in the educational field conducted every three years. He added that the government is optimistic that Delhi will achieve a distinct place on the educational map of the world by 2024. 

Speaking about the schemes, he said that from next year onwards the government will start a scheme to provide newspapers to children in order to develop an interest in newspaper reading in their minds. The government also conducted special classes for over 40,000 students on the current financial year in order to improve their communication skills and develop their spoken English skills as well. 

Nearly 25,000 class 11 students have already been included in spoken English and communication skills programme and Rs. 12 Crore has been set aside for the same. With the Spoken English scheme proving to be a success, the government has also proposed to extend the programme to the students who have passed thor examination from the different schools in Delhi in the last five years.

The Delhi government is also set to launch the school health scheme next year. An amount of Rs. 22 Crore has been set aside for the same. Students will be provided with multipurpose identity cards with their health details mentioned on them. 

He also added that the government has also planned on establishing Delhi’s own State Board of Education with an aim to establish such an education system and examinations in which the students can focus on understanding and learning apart from scoring marks. The new schemes will prepare them for the upcoming challenges in the world. 

The minister also pointed out that the government has also set aside Rs. 62 Crore for the same with a budget for the SCERT.
