
Jadavpur University Begins Virtual Classes: As per the official update, Jadavpur University has commenced holding virtual classes for students of Arts and Science streams for previous semester to complete the syllabus that was left during lockdown period. Online and Virtual Classes for students of science and arts stream courses have begun for the previous semester which had to be suspended due to lockdown in March, confirmed a senior official from the varsity. Students have also been provided the necessary study materials including downloadable soft copies of notes and audio and video clips of lectures from the university website. In order to access the study materials, students need to log onto the official website i.e. jaduniv.edu.in.
Resources to Be Shared Among Students
Addressing the issue of digital divide and how it limits the access to quality study materials for the students, the university officials said that the study notes can be shared by students. Students who do not have internet connectivity or devices that can showcases multimedia content, can take help from other students who have these facilities. Students with internet connectivity may also be provided access to study materials via Email and WhatsApp. If students are unable to find the study material for their courses online on the official website, they can instead also connect with their faculty members directly. "The same procedure will be used for the first semester classes to begin in September. We do not want to delay the academic calendar anymore," the official added.
University Trying to Address Digital Divide
Jadavpur University is also trying to address the issue of digital divide by collaborating with various stakeholders. As per reports, Jadavpur University Vice Chancellor Profesor Suranjan Das has said that to understand the gravity of the situation, the university authorities and students unions separately conducted surveys to ascertain the number of students who do not have phones with net connectivity. The varsity is trying to build a corpus fund to provide android phones with high data pack to students who need them. So far, chambers (of commerce and industry), alumni, teachers and even individuals outside the university have been approached to contribute to this initiative.
