Revised UGC pay scale to be implemented for teachers of West Bengal

The West Bengal Government has announced that the revised UGC pay scale will be implemented for the teachers of the colleges and universities in the state.

The government of West Bengal will be implementing the revised UGC pay scale for the teachers in the colleges and universities in the state from January 1, 2020, onwards. Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee was addressing a meeting of 15,000 teachers of the colleges and universities of the state on Tuesday when the announcement was made.

The CM announced that the implementation of the revised UGC pay scale is as per the recommendation of the 7th Central Pay Commission. As per this, it will obtain an expenditure of Rs. 1000 crores on state wealth. Others present at the meeting included education minister Partha Chatterjee along with other senior government officials.

The revised pay scale will be implemented in the government colleges, aided colleges, and the universities in the state. The teachers will also be provided with a three percent increment on their respective salaries for four years which is from 2016 to 2019. The CM said that the amount has to be mobilized.

The chief minister who urged the teachers to accept the pay said that very few states in the country have implemented the revised UGC pay scale. Criticizing the central government state CM said that projects like Kanyashree and Sabujsathi cannot be stopped and projects like the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan have to be continued. She further said that although the centre and the state have different salary structures the government will provide the teachers and the government employees whatever they can.

The CM also said that in order to make sure that the job security of part-time teachers and guest lecturers in the different colleges is provided; the government has designated the above-mentioned categories as state-aided college teachers who will work until 60 years like the permanent teachers. The CM has also asked the college teachers to make sure that the events which involve students take place on a regular basis.

While urging the students to respect their teachers, the CM said that the government will make sure that the teachers can work peacefully. She further assured the teachers that the government is on their said that expect the teachers and students to maintain cordial ties.
