All-Boys Sainik Schools will start admitting girl students from 2021 onwards, as per a recent order issued by the Government. According to the latest update, Narendra Modi led NDA Government is planning on revising the admission rules for Sainik Schools which will allow girl students to seek admission. As per a report, the government is expected to finalize the details by lte 2020 and implement the historic move by 2021.
What are Sainik Schools?
Sainik Schools are all-boys schools which were developed to train and develop boy cadets to be inducted into the armed forced. The schools acted like feeder institutions providing a steady flow of trained cadets which Indian Army, Navy and Air Force could induct for entry level positions. Currently, Sainik Schools only induct girls who are the children of the schools’ staff.
However, in line with the long pending demand of students, parents and academics, Modi Government has decided to open admission to Sainik Schools for girl students as well from 2021 onwards. Currently there are 28 Sainik Schools across the country, which will be transformed into co-educational institutions by 2021.
Schools asked to develop necessary Infrastructure
As part of the decision to transform Sainik schools into co-educational institutions, State Governments have been asked to develop the necessary infrastructure to make these schools ready to induct girl students. As part of its infrastructural development, schools have also been asked to develop the necessary medical facilities required by the students.
Nation-wide Implementation after Pilot Project
Prior to the nation-wide implementation of idea, the project of transforming Sainik Schools into co-educational institutions was tested in a pilot project at Chhingchhip, Mizoram, last year. After positive results from the pilot project, it was decided to roll-out the project at a national-level.
