UP Schools are all set to get Hindi Textbooks in local dialects soon, as per a media report. The latest update suggests that the Uttar Pradesh State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is planning to introduce textbooks for Hindi in local dialects. These books will be developed from the scratch and will be based on four key local dialects that are widely spoken in the state. The local dialects in which state SCERT is planning to release new books include Braj, Bhojpuri, Bundelkhandi and Awadhi. The new text-books developed as part of this project will be titled 'Sahaj' and only Hindi sections of these books will be translated by the SCERT.
Sahaj Books Released by UP Education Minister
New ‘Sahaj’ books developed in local dialects were released by the State Education Minister Satish Dwivedi at a review meeting on 11th September 2019. The minister also informed that a pilot project will be launched starting end of the week under which Sahaj books will be used to teach Class 1 and Class 2 students from Mathura, Gorakhpur, Lalitpur and Barabanki districts. The pilot project will be launched in 10 schools in these four districts. After reviewing the results of the pilot project, the books will be introduced as part of syllabus across the state.
Why ‘Sahaj’ Books?
Sahaj books have been commissioned by the state government to give greater importance to colloquial languages. In Sahaj books, the lessons or the content of the text is the same and only the language has been translated to help students to understand it better. Furthermore, the education department also hopes to increase and improve the learning outcomes among the school students who use these dialects as their mother tongue through Sahaj books. Commenting on the development, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Joint Director Ajay Singh said that the project as conceptualized as a means to help students learn lessons in a language that is easy for them to comprehend.
Books to have QR Code based Audio Lesson
Through Sahaj books, UP Education Department is also trying to solve another problem that is often encountered by school teachers. Being the largest state of India, teachers who are transferred from one part of the state to another, are often unable to connect with the students in the local dialects or mother tongue. This often alienates them from their students.
To overcome this, Sahaj books come equipped with a QR code based Audio Lessons. Teachers who are not familiar or comfortable with local dialects can scan the QR code provided in the Sahaj books to play an audio lesson for the students in the local dialect. Sahaj books are expected to break the language barrier and help improve learning outcomes among the students.
