Summary of The Thief’s Story

A 15-year-old boy gets involved in the act of robbery and petty thievery to run his daily life. He was a poor kid with no home and no money to buy him food. One day when he was on his hunt for his next target, he came across Anil who seemed like an easy target. The boy went up to him and passed an appealing smile to Anil. He introduced himself as Hari Singh and changed his name every week to save himself from the police and his ex-targets. He told Anil that he wanted to work for him to which Anil replied that he could not pay him. The boy says that he wants food to eat to which Anil asks if he knows how to cook. The boy lies and says yes. Anil realised that he did not know how to cook soon after taking the first bite of the food made by the young kid. He affirms to the boy that he will teach him how to cook, learn, read, and write.

Slowly, time passed by and the boy kept working for Anil for the past month. He had robbed only a rupee or two while buying daily supplies. But, other than that he had stopped stealing because he started to enjoy his life and his work at Anil’s. He liked waking up, cooking, learning from Anil, and buying his daily supplies. The boy had now learned to write short sentences. Anil was into writing for magazines and trading. Every time he would wait for his new cheque and immediately rush to celebrate after receiving one.

One day he got a huge amount of cash which he placed under the mattress. The boy got excited about the money and wanted to steal. At night when Anil was asleep, he took the money and ran away to catch the Lucknow Express at 10:30 PM. He reached the station and found that the train was about to speed up, so he thought of taking a big leap to catch hold of the train. But his concise did not let him do so and he missed the train.

He had nowhere to go except for his master’s from where he had stolen 600 notes of 50 rupees. He went to a bazaar and sat down on a bench when it started raining. The notes were wet, his clothes stuck to his body, and his mind numb because of the cold breeze. The boy started thinking of his master who would get hurt in the morning, not because he lost his money but because he lost trust, he lost a friend. He realised that it is important to be a respectable man and earn plenty of money rather than getting involved in these acts of theft. He could not control his emotions and went back to Anil’s house. He slowly placed the money back at its original place and went to sleep. In the morning, Anil had already woken up and prepared tea for himself. He handed over a 50 rupee note which was still wet from last night’s rain and said that he had some extra money this time, so he would be paying him regularly. The boy got too emotional as he held that 50 rupee note since he realized that Anil knew about the incident but still ignored it.
