The Delhi University in April 2012 decided to provide a 10% relaxation on the minimum eligibility criteria to OBC candidates. This decision was influenced by a 2011 Supreme Court order. The Delhi University order broadened the scope for students from the other backward class (OBC) category to apply for admission to Delhi University from 2012 academic year. The directive will hold good for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses from the 2012-13 session.
The University reserves 27% of its 54000 seats for OBC candidates at the undergraduate level. Following the latest directive, the OBC candidates will enjoy relaxation on the minimum eligibility in the qualifying criteria and in the minimum eligibility for the admission entrance test to the extent of 10% of the minimum eligibility prescribed for general candidates. For example, if the minimum eligibility for admission to a certain course is 50% for the general category, then the minimum eligibility criteria for OBC students would be 45%. The initiative introduced by the Delhi University will ensure that less number of OBC seats go vacant.
It was earlier observed that despite the 10% relaxation, OBC seats would remain vacant. However with the relaxation now linked to the minimum eligibility, the seats will not go vacant. Also more OBC candidates will be able to apply.
