Under the Development of Sports Infrastructure and Equipment in Universities and Colleges scheme during the XII Plan, the UGC has decided to provide a grant of Rs. 312.20 crores to colleges and universities for development of the sports facilities in the campuses. This scheme would encourage the colleges to develop existing outdoor/indoor infrastructure and establish new facilities, so that the participation of the students in sports could get elevated.
Not only the UGC has granted a whooping sum for the development of sports in the school and college level, but it has also sent direction to universities and colleges to fill up all the vacancies for teachers which include sports teachers.
The government is making efforts to promote sports in schools and colleges as well. It is revising the norms of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan so that it could include Physical Training Instructor at upper primary level, so that the students could start early in the field of sports.
Under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shisha Abhiyan (RMSA), the secondary schools are offered financial assistance so that they could purchase sports materials to develop the infrastructure of sports in various schools. The XII Plan of UGC has seen many implementations that are made to promote sports in the higher education institutions in the country.
Those who would win sports medals/participants of national/international events would get free education. The development of infrastructure of sports in the universities and colleges is on top of the charts for the government. It is also planning to establish a centre of excellence for development of Sports in various universities across the nation.
