IAS Main Political Science and International Relations Question Paper II- 2010

Political Science and International Relations is an optional subject available for the Main exam of the UPSC Civil Services Exam. This is the question paper of Political Science and International Relations Paper II of IAS Main Examination 2010.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) holds the Civil Services Examination every year in two parts, i.e. Preliminary Test and Main Examination; the Main Examination comprises a written Test and a Personality Test. The Question paper of the IAS Main Political Science and International Relations Paper II  –2010 is given as below:

Time Allowed: Three Hourse

Maximum Marks: 300

INSTRUCTIONS

Each question is printed both in Hindi and in English.

Answer must be' written in the medium specified in the admission Certificate issued to you, which must be stated clearly on the cover of the answer-book  in the space provided for the purpose. No marks will be  given for the answer written in an medium other than that specified in the admission Certificate.

Candidates should attempt Question Nos. 1, and 5 which are compulsory, and any three of the reamining questions selecting at least one question from each Section.

The number of marks carried by each question is indicated at the end of the question.

SECTION A

1. Answer the following in about 200 words each: 20×3=60

(a) How is the modern comparative politics approach different from the traditional legal - instotutional approach ?

(b) Examine the changing nature of security in the times.

(c) Explain the meaning and application of the concept of 'strategic engagement'.

2.(a) Examine  the post- modernist critique of Relasim in international politics. 20

(b) Assess in detail the prospects of the ernergence of a nuclear-weapons- free world. 40

3.(a) Discuss the different perspectives on global enviroment that have emerged in the context of the Copenhagen Summit.   20

(b) Critically examine globalisation from a Third World perspective.   40

4. Bring out your perspectives on the following in about 200 words each:   20×3=60

(a) Plausible aims of the Non-Aligned Movement in the Post-Cold War periopd

(b) The indications of the emergence of a global civil society

(c) Should National Interest be viewed as a constant category or is it situation- specified ?

5. Answer the following in about 200 words each: 20×3=60

(a) Can Israel be termed a 'natural ally' of India ?

(b) Examine India 's response to the Af-Pak policy of The US.

(c) Bring out the role played by Indian armed forces in UN peace-keeping  efforts in various parts of the world.

6. (a) Examine the nature of the issues currently being debated with the European Union.   20

(b) Assess the problems being faced by India on acocunt illegal migration into the country.   40

7. (a) Comment on the recent trends in Russia's foreign policy.   20

(b) " The UN today is more of social service organisation than an exclusively security - oriented body." Critically examine.  40

8. (a) Bring out India's perspectives and Council.  20

(b) Would it be to India's benefit if it were to Pursue a more serious relationship with South- East Asia ? Critically evaluate.  40
