IAS Prelims 2014: Health Tips

    IAS Prelims Exam 2014 is going to be held on 24th August, 2014. The IAS Exam 2014 will start with the notification from UPSC scheduled to be issued on 17 May 2014. The IAS Prelims Syllabus will be notified in that notification.IAS Prelims consists of General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT). Among other things one of the major hindrances in the exam preparation are the health issues.

    High level of competitiveness leads to a lot of stress in the mind of candidates resulting in various stress-related health problems. The huge amount of effort and hard work that is required for the exam also leads to exertion. Apart from this, many candidates go far away from their homes to cities like Delhi for preparation, where they have to take care of their health all by themselves. Here, they can catch various air, food or water borne infections which can prove disastrous for their exam preparation. Also, due to long hours of study, the candidates can have posture-related health problems like back-ache, Cervical Spondylitis, etc.  
    All these health related problems can affect the preparation of the exam and lead to reduced performance in the exam. This necessitates it for the candidates to pay great attention to their health and make best efforts to keep themselves healthy. Jagran josh provides tips from health experts on how to maintain a good health during the IAS exam preparation:

    Eat healthy:
    •    The candidates should take a balanced and healthy diet. The diet should include a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.
    •    It is very important to eat the three main meals in a day without skipping any meal. The candidates can eat sprouted pulses in the morning, which is a very healthy breakfast. Along with this, healthy snacks like fresh fruits and dry fruits should be taken in between.
    •    Drink as much water as you can, especially in summers.
    •    Outside and junk food must be avoided as much as possible.
    •    Take curd and buttermilk regularly as they nurture the healthy gut bacteria (probiotic bacteria) that help fight stomach problems.

    Exercise:
    •    Regular physical exercise is very important for maintaining a good health. The candidates should include brisk walking, jogging, cycling or swimming in their daily schedule. But make it a point not to overdo it at the cost of your studies.
    •    Apart from this, they can do yoga and meditation that keep not only your body but also your mind healthy.

    Avoid stress:
    •    Keep a positive attitude and avoid any kind of mental stress.
    •    Try to indulge in leisure activities like music, dance, painting etc. These help prevent boredom and monotony and also prevent mental stress.
    •    Outdoor sports like tennis, badminton, football are also excellent stress busters.
    •    Take a ten minutes break after every hour of study.

    Avoid illness:
    •    Wash your hands regularly and pay great attention to your hygiene.
    •    Drink filtered or boiled water only.
    •    Avoid direct contact with ill friends like handshake or sharing same utensils.
    •    Keep your immunization up to date.
    •    The candidates can take nutrient supplements like multivitamins to make up for the deficiencies in their diets. Female candidates should take iron supplements also.
    •    Consult a doctor in case you fall ill.

    Sleep:
    •    Proper sleep is very essential for the candidates preparing for IAS.
    •    Get at least 6-8 hours of sleep every day.
    •    Try to sleep at the same time every day, in order to maintain your sleep rhythm and avoid insomnia.
    •    Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee few hours before bedtime.

    Habits:
    Avoid habits like smoking and alcohol. These reduce body’s performance, especially in the long run.
