IBPS SO Exam 2015: Reasoning-Concept and Sample Question-Syllogism

Feb 4, 2015 15:15 IST

    The banking team of jagranjosh.com has come up with concept and sample questions for Syllogism. The concept provided by us will help you to understand the topic. The sample questions offered by us are framed by keeping in view need of the question paper.

    Syllogism is a kind of formal argument in logic, which is formed by two statements and a conclusion that is true, if statements are true.

    1. All stars twinkle

    In this statement all the stars are twinkles, hence they should come under twinkles. So the representation will be as follows:

    S = Stars, T = Twinkle

    2. Some stars twinkle.

    As in this statement only some stars are twinkles, there should be two intersecting circles. So the representation will be as follows:

    The shaded area represents the stars that twinkle. S = Stars, T = Twinkle

    3. No stars twinkle

    As no stars twinkle, hence these two are independent of each other. So the representation will be as follows:

    S = Stars, T = Twinkle

    4. Only stars twinkle

    In this case only stars twinkle, twinkle will come under stars. Nothing else can twinkle so twinkle will not have anything except starts intersecting with it. So the representation will be as follows:

    S = Stars, T = Twinkle

    EXAMPLE 1: Statements:

    1. All fans are watches.

    2. Some watches are black.

    1. All watches are fans.

    2. Some fans are black.

    In the premises, the middle term is ‘watches’. Clearly, it is not distributed in the first premise which is an A proposition as it does not form its subject. Also, it is not distributed in the second premise which is an I proposition. Since the middle term is not distributed at least once in the premises, so no conclusion follows.
