MBA at IIMs is a dream-come-true for any MBA aspirant. However, very few aspirants know what makes IIMs stand apart from the other B-schools. Here, students from IIM Calcutta share their experiences and opinions about why they choose IIM Calcutta over other B-schools. They talk about the Joka Culture, the academic excellence at IIMs as well as the different cultural and extracurricular activities that make IIM Calcutta stand apart from the other B-schools.

Sports Secretary – Student Council
When you compare - IIM Calcutta with other B-schools in the country, the first thing that strikes you is the campus; IIM Calcutta has one of the most beautiful campuses in India. The Campus is home to over 7 lakes and this unique feature has earned it the title - ‘The Campus of 7 Lakes’.
Second, striking difference between IIM Calcutta and the other B-schools is the ‘Joka’ Culture. The students at IIM Calcutta share a unique bond and camaraderie among themselves which makes the campus stand apart from others. In addition, this bond is also extended to the faculty members as well as the alumni of IIM-Calcutta, who hold very consequential positions in the industry. In fact, IIM-Calcutta is one of those institutes which takes pride on the bonding that students, alumni and faculty share.
Thirdly, in terms of sports facilities, IIM Calcutta definitely stands apart from others as it provides the best sporting experience across all the B-schools in the country. This claim is also validated by the fact that IIM Calcutta has been the champion of the inter IIM Sports Meet, that occurs between IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta and Lucknow, for last two years. Apart from this, students from IIM Calcutta also participate in various other competitions, both on campus as well as off-campus. There are more than 20 sporting teams, for boys and girls both, within the campus that include different sporting activities.
All these three aspects, beautiful campus, the Joka culture and the bond between the students and the excellent sporting facilities, make IIM Calcutta a very active campus, a vibrant campus that is high on energy.

IIM Calcutta has developed excellent support structure to build a unique bond between the intra and the inter batches which come into the campus. This is one of the prime reasons that IIM Calcutta students and the alumnus relate with each other better as compared to any other B-school.
In addition, the B-school also provides very good mentors who can help and guide the students on every minor and major thing that goes on within the campus; starting from placements to cultural events.
Thirdly, the friendly faculty at IIM Calcutta share a special connect with the students, which gives the latter a chance to not limit their discussion to academic topics only but also pick their brains on a variety of topics that extend beyond the classrooms. At times, the faculty invites existing students to assist them on a variety of research projects as well.
So, these are some of the factors that make IIM Calcutta a very special B-School.

It is a given fact that IIM Calcutta is a Centre of Excellence, but what makes it stand apart from other B-schools is its culture. The learning experience that students get at IIM Calcutta is not just limited to academics. Academics still remains the prime focus at IIM Calcutta and the having one of the best research profiles in India and having some of the brightest minds as the faculty surely corroborates that fact. But, at the same time, the Joka culture is something that also sets us apart.
There is a popular saying in Joka Culture ‘We do not leave anyone behind’ and this translates in reality the moment you step into the campus. The seniors come forward to groom the new comes and help in each and every aspect, be it academic or otherwise.
In addition to this, IIM Calcutta has over 20 clubs that are active on the campus. These include Consulting Club, Finance Club, Operations Club, Marketing Cell- we have two Marketing Clubs. Apart from this, IIM Calcutta also hosts two major events i.e. Intaglio – the annual business summit and Carpe Diem – the annual cultural festival. These also add a unique flavour to the IIM Campus.

The campus of IIM Calcutta is very beautiful and having seven lakes on the campus surely makes it stand apart from the other B-schools. In addition to this, the Joka Culture, wherein everyone feels that they do not want to leave anyone behind, also adds to the uniqueness of the campus life at IIM-Calcutta. For instance, during placements, the celebrations are held only after each and every single student is placed at the end of the placement process. IIM Calcutta is not just about the academics, there are several other activities and clubs to keep students engaged throughout their course period. For instance, the clubs and the annual festivals that we organise at IIM Calcutta are unique and make the B-school different from others.

The first and most visually striking difference will be the seven lakes that are found on the campus. Apart from this, the combination of the finance campus of India coupled with the brilliantness of the faculty also makes it stand out from other B-schools in the country. Add to that, the unique learning ecosystem that has been developed by IIM Calcutta which includes clubs, student activities and annual festivals as well as the academic setup, makes it unique. So, all these things are combined together, to give us a major advantage over other IIMs.

IIM Calcutta has over 25 clubs, some of which are related to the functions of management (MBA specializations) like marketing, consulting and finance. While there are many other non-academic clubs as well on the campus which are dedicated to social service, cultural activities; cells related to entrepreneurship and external relations and others. IIM Calcutta also has an in-house music band as well. The B-school also organizes two major annual festivals i.e. Intaglio – the annual business summit and Carpe Diem – the annual cultural festival. All these clubs and activities keep students engaged throughout their course period of two years. The most active club on campus would be the Toastmaters, which encourages public speaking among the students by organizing various events.

IIM Calcutta has several factors that differentiate it from the other B-schools in the country. IIM-C would be most active campus among all the IIMs in terms of sports. The B-school has won the Intra IIM sports meet for past two years. Students get a number of options to groom themselves and enhance their sporting talent here.
Apart from this, IIM Calcutta also has several clubs and activities which keep students engaged throughout the year. There are over 20+ student clubs and interest groups on campus and each one operates in a completely different domain, offering something unique to every student in line with their areas of interest.
