As soon as the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stepped down from the responsibility of Chancellor of Visva Bharati University, present Prime Minister Narendra Modi replaced him to sit on the prestigious chair. According to a University notification, “The President in his capacity as the Visitor of Visva Bharati (Acharya) has been pleased to appoint Prime Minster Narendra Modi as the Chancellor of Visva Bharati for a term of three years.”
The resolution to make Prime Minister Modi, the next Chancellor of the university had passed way back in the month of July by the executive council of the university. The resolution was then sent to the HRD Ministry for getting the final seal. The time in which Modi is going to take the responsibility as a chancellor in the university is quite vital as presently the Vice Chancellor of the university is facing probe financial and administrative irregularities for quite some time.
Under an Act of Parliament in 1951, Visva Bharati was declared a central university and an institution of national importance. This is also the only central university in the entire nation that gets the nation’s Prime Minister to be its chancellor, making a special place for the university in the academic field around the nation.
While the Prime Minister is give the post of Acharya (Chancellor), the President holds the post of Paridarsaka (Visitor) in the university. The President also elects the Upacharya (Vice-Chancellor) of the University. The Governor of West Bengal is given the post of Pradhana (Rector) in the university.
