Which State Tops School Education Index: Chandigarh has achieved the highest score in school education worldwide. With 703 points out of 1000 points, the city-state is the only one Prachesta‑1 grade range (701–760). This has shown improvement from last year’s score of 687.8.

The PGI evaluated six areas, including the learning outcomes, digital learning, infrastructure and governance. Chandigarh has managed to perform well across all the domains, boosting the total score.

Who are the other top performers?

Punjab, Odisha, Kerala, Delhi, Gujarat and several other states have performed well. These states have earned ratings in Prachesta‑3 grade (581–640), reflecting good performance.

Andaman & Nicobar, Chhattisgarh See Big Drops

In contrast, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have recorded the largest fall, losing about 43 points, followed by Chhattisgarh, which fell by 39 points and Lakshadweep by 33 points. The decrease in numbers suggests growing concerns about school access, teaching quality and learning outcomes in the affected areas.
This indicates a need for focused intervention and improvement in the school systems.

The top and bottom performers stand far apart: Chandigarh leads with 703, while Meghalaya ranks lowest with just 417, placing it in the “Akankshi‑3” band (401–460).

Well, the gap between top and bottom has narrowed over time—from a 51% difference in 2017–18 to 42% in 2023–24: showing progress in many under-performing regions.

Important Points To Note

  • Regions like Andaman and Chhattisgarh must address the weak areas like teacher training, infrastructure, and digital access. These improvements can help raise the education quality.
  • Most states (24 out of 36) improved their scores year-on-year. This shrinking gap suggests more balanced development across India.
  • Chandigarh’s outstanding performance is a model for emulation. This proves that targeted policies and consistent efforts can uplift education. The big drop in the Andaman and Nicobar and Chhattisgarh indicates that the school education still needs some improvement and reforms. Now, the remaining regions must use the PGI insights to guide their reforms.

This report also highlights the widening gap between top and bottom performers. Chandigarh stands out among all with good infrastructure and strong governance, and states like Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh still need improvement. The report mentions the need for targeted interventions, especially in teacher training and classroom practices, to help bridge the gap and provide equal education to all.
