Rekha Gupta, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and MLA from Shalimar Bagh, has been announced as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. BJP sources confirmed her appointment after a legislature party meeting. Gupta's appointment marks the BJP's return to power in Delhi after 27 years. Rekha Gupta is the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi, after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi Marlena Singh, and the second woman BJP Chief Minister.
Election Victory
Gupta defeated AAP's Bandana Kumari by 29,595 votes in the Shalimar Bagh constituency in the recent Delhi assembly elections. She got 68,200 votes in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Election. The BJP won 48 seats out of 70 in the Assembly election.
Early Life and Political Career
Gupta started her political career at the age of 50 in the early 1990s when she became a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University. She was elected as the President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) in 1996-97. Gupta has been a councillor and National Vice President of BJP's Mahila Morcha. She has also served as General Secretary of the BJP state unit of Delhi and has been a member of the party's National Executive. She was elected to the MCD Councillor from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007.

Swearing-In and Security Arrangements
Her swearing-in ceremony will take place on February 20 at Ramlila Maidan. The ceremony is likely to be graced by the presence of BJP's senior leaders. Over 25,000 security forces will be stationed in the central, north, and New Delhi districts of the city for the ceremony.

Gupta possesses assets worth Rs 5.3 crore and liabilities of Rs 1.2 crore. She is known for her grassroots work and organizational abilities within the party. Her priority areas have been community development, women's empowerment, and education reforms.
