In Mexico, avocados are best known for the Hass variety of avocados which are loved for their creamy texture and rich flavour.

Mexico is the leading avocado producer, with around 2.5 million metric tonnes per year. It has favourable volcanic soil and ideal climate conditions for Hass avocados, which are creamy and rich and used all over the world. Mexico is also the world leader in avocado exports, with most avocados being exported to the U.S., Canada, and Japan.

Colombia is the second biggest avocado producer, with around 1.1 million metric tonnes produced per year. The avocado industry in Colombia is developing rapidly, especially in the Antioquia and Tolima regions. Colombia exports great quantities of avocados to Europe and has become a key player in the global avocado market.

Peru is the third largest avocado producer, with approximately 0.9 million metric tonnes of total production. It grows both Hass and Fuerte varieties of avocados. Avocado farming is primarily located in the coastal valleys of Peru, which has the most favourable climate because of its dry conditions. Peru exports a large volume of avocados to Europe and China.

Indonesia ranks fourth and produces about 0.7 million metric tonnes. The tropical climate creates the ideal conditions to facilitate year-round avocado production. Although most of the avocados are consumed locally, the output of avocados is growing rapidly.

Kenya is producing around 0.4 million metric tonnes per annum. Kenya's avocado exports have developed in recent years, especially to the Middle East and Europe. The majority of avocados grown in Kenya are Fuerte and Hass.

The other main avocado-producing countries include the United States, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Brazil, and Vietnam. Countries such as Chile, for example, grow avocados mostly geared toward export work, while others, hopefully, primarily grow for consumption within the producer country. In general, all of these countries have the benefit of tropical or subtropical climates that are good for growing avocados.
