December 6, 2024, marks the 68th death anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, a man who not only crafted the Indian Constitution but also devoted his life to fighting for social justice and the rights of the marginalized. Known as the chief architect of India’s Constitution, Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to the nation's legal and social framework continue to shape the country today. On Mahaparinirvan Diwas, people gather at Chaityabhoomi in Mumbai to pay their respects and reflect on his legacy.
A Day of Tribute and Reflection
Every year, on this significant day, thousands of people, particularly from Maharashtra and across the country, visit Chaityabhoomi, the final resting place of Dr. Ambedkar. This place holds deep significance for his followers, as it represents not only his contributions to the country but also his message of equality and justice.
Many come not just to offer flowers and prayers but also to draw inspiration from his life and teachings.
Dr. Ambedkar’s vision was clear: to create a society where all people, regardless of their caste, religion, or gender, are treated with respect and dignity. His fight against the caste system, his advocacy for education and empowerment, and his role in shaping India’s Constitution are celebrated by millions. Mahaparinirvan Diwas serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of his work and the ongoing struggle for social justice.
What’s Closed and What’s Open on Mahaparinirvan Diwas
In Mumbai and its surrounding areas, December 6 is observed as a local holiday. As people gather to remember Dr. Ambedkar, state and semi-government offices are closed for the day. Similarly, liquor shops across the city are shut, as the Mumbai city collector has declared this day a dry day.
However, life continues in some sectors. Public and private banks, including major ones like the State Bank of India, will remain open, as will the stock markets. Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will function as usual, without any interruptions in trading hours.
Special Arrangements for Visitors at Chaityabhoomi
With large crowds expected at Chaityabhoomi, the Central Railway has made several provisions to manage the increased footfall. To assist visitors, new holding areas have been set up at key stations across Mumbai. For the first time, additional trains will be running to accommodate the crowds—12 extra suburban trains will be deployed, six each on the main and harbor lines, on both December 5 and 6. This will ensure a smooth journey for those heading to pay tribute.
At Dadar station, a busy spot for people traveling to Chaityabhoomi, separate entry and exit points have been created to reduce congestion. Additionally, the Mumbai Traffic Police have issued guidelines to ensure smooth traffic flow, with special traffic arrangements in place from 6:00 AM on December 5 to midnight on December 7.
These measures are designed to help manage the large number of visitors and to ensure everyone’s safety and convenience during this significant occasion.
In conclusion, Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2024 is not only a day of remembering a great leader but also a day for people to reflect on the values he stood for—equality, justice, and human dignity. As we pay tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, let us be reminded of his enduring message and strive to carry forward his work towards a more inclusive society.
