Martyr’s Day 2025: Why Are There Different Dates for Shaheed Diwas Apart from January 30 and March 23?

Martyr's Day, also popularly known as Shaheed Diwas, is a befitting tribute in India to the most patriotically selfless brigade of men who gave up their lives for India to achieve freedom. Though January 30 and March 23 are most dominantly marked dates of such observance, others in the course of the year are many, each carrying its own historicity.

This day is the anniversary of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. On this day, not only is Gandhi remembered, but all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom and progress are also paid tribute.

Historical Context

The observance of Martyr's Day began as a response to Gandhi's assassination, which shocked the nation and highlighted the sacrifices made during the struggle for independence. In 1949, the Indian government officially declared January 30th as a national holiday to honour Gandhi's legacy and contributions to India's independence movement. The day serves as a reminder of the values of non-violence, peace, and justice that Gandhi championed throughout his life

Martyr's Day Anniversary

January 30

Mahatma Gandhi is remembered as India's non-violent struggle icon to gain freedom from British rule, and today marks the date of his assassination on January 30. On 1948, Nathuram Godse assassinated him when he was walking to the prayer meeting scheduled at Birla Bhawan in Delhi.

This tragic event did not only mean the end of a pivotal figure in Indian history but also represented violent opposition to the ideals of peace and non-violence for which Gandhi had fought. Since then, January 30 is observed as Martyr's Day in honor of Gandhi and all others who laid down their lives for India's independence.

March 23

Another significant date is March 23, which is the martyrdom day of the three revolutionary freedom fighters: Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar. These three young men were hanged in 1931 for their acts of revolutionary activities against British colonial rule.

Their boldness and determination toward the cause of independence have made them iconic symbols of resistance and heroism among India's struggle for freedom. March 23 serves as a reminder of their sacrifice and inspires generations ahead to pursue the values that they fought for.

Other Days of Observance

Besides the above two important days, some other days of Martyrs' Days are celebrated across India.

  • February 15: This marks the day for 34 martyrs who died when police shot at them when hoisting a flag in Bihar in 1932.
  • October 21: Police Commemoration Day is celebrated on this day, paying tribute to police personnel who died in service.
  • November 17: This day marks the death anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai, one of the key leaders in the Indian independence movement.
  • November 19: In Jhansi, it is celebrated as Rani Lakshmibai's birthday, acknowledging her contribution during the rebellion of 1857.
