Who is Maa Siddhidatri?

Maa Siddhidatri is revered as the goddess who fulfils all desires and bestows eight major Siddhis (supernatural powers), which are Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Ishitva, and Vashitva. She is depicted sitting on a lotus, holding a conch, discus, mace, and lotus flower in her four hands. Her vehicle is a lion, symbolising strength and fearlessness.

In Hindu mythology, it is believed that Lord Shiva attained his divine form of Ardhanarishvara—half man, half woman—by receiving the blessings of Maa Siddhidatri. She provided Shiva with the power to balance both masculine and feminine energies, making her integral in cosmic balance and creation.

What is the Story and Significance of Maa Siddhidatri?

In the beginning, when the universe was a vast, dark void devoid of life, Maa Siddhidatri brought forth the supreme Hindu trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—and entrusted them with the cosmic responsibilities of creation, preservation, and transformation (or destruction).

Following the Mahadevi's instructions, the three gods proceeded to the ocean, where they performed intense penance to gain their divine powers. Pleased by their dedication, Maa Siddhidatri bestowed upon them various siddhis (spiritual powers).

In addition to granting them powers, she also blessed each of them with a divine consort—each an incarnation of the goddess herself. Lord Brahma was united with Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge; Lord Vishnu with Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth; and Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati, the embodiment of power and transformation.

Maa Shailputri, one of Durga’s forms, also revealed that these divine partners would be the source of their strength, guiding them in fulfilling their respective duties. Thus, through the combined efforts of the Trimurti and their consorts, the universe took shape and was sustained.

The ninth day, Navami, holds particular significance as it marks the end of the intense spiritual journey of Navratri, during which devotees seek the blessings of Durga in her various forms. By the ninth day, the spiritual energy of the festival peaks, and devotees focus on receiving divine knowledge and blessings for their overall well-being.

Worshipping Maa Siddhidatri on this day is believed to:

  • Grant Spiritual Fulfilment: Devotees seek her blessings to attain higher levels of consciousness and divine wisdom.
  • Remove Obstacles: Siddhidatri is known to help her followers overcome life’s challenges by granting them the spiritual powers necessary to rise above obstacles.
  • Complete the Navratri Journey: With her blessings, devotees feel spiritually enriched and ready to embrace the wisdom they've gained throughout the nine days of fasting, prayer, and devotion.

Navratri, culminating in the worship of Maa Siddhidatri, is a journey from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge. The worship of each goddess throughout the festival prepares devotees for the ultimate goal—spiritual awakening and fulfillment. By worshipping Maa Siddhidatri, devotees conclude Navratri with a sense of accomplishment, empowerment, and spiritual connection to the divine.
