Andhra Pradesh to introduce English Medium in Government Schools from next academic year

Andhra Pradesh Government is all set to introduce English Medium for Government Schools from next academic year. As per the latest update, Andhra Pradesh Government will introduce English as a medium of learning for primary school students studying in Government Schools based in the state. The decision will be implemented for Government School students who are studying from Class 1 to Class 8.

Decision Announced Through Formal Order

AP Government released a formal notification or order confirming the news about introduction of English as medium of study for Government schools in the state. The order was released on 5th November 2019 – Tuesday by Andhra Pradesh School Education Department, which said that all government, MPP, and Zilla Parishad schools will be converted to English Medium schools from next academic year onwards.

Phase Implementation in Two Years

According to the order, the decision to transform primary level government schools into English medium will be implemented in two phases. In Phase 1, which will be implemented from the academic year 2020-21, all MPP, and Zilla Parishad schools will be converted into English Medium Schools for Class 1 to Class 8 students. Similarly, the Phase 2 of the project will be implemented in academic year 2021-22, which will see Class 9 and Class 10 schools converted into English Medium. As part of the project, the Government has also allowed opening of parallel English Medium Schools in existing high schools for classes VI to X.

Telugu & Urdu to be Compulsory Subjects

Apart from making Primary and High Schools English medium, the Andhra Pradesh School Education Department order also called upon schools to make additional efforts to make Telugu and Urdu as compulsory subjects. The decision to make these language subjects as compulsory will be implemented by the government schools in line with the the current medium of instruction in the schools.

Teacher Training and Recruitment

The Government order has also made provisions for teacher training and recruitment to ensure availability of trained and qualified teachers for English Medium Schools. Teachers will be trained and equipped with the necessary language skills to ensure that there is no gap in terms of teaching pedagogy and learning processes and outcomes during the implementation of the order. Similarly, the order also calls for the revival of English Language Teaching Centers and District English Centers (DECs) as District Institutes for Education and Training (DIETs).
